本讲座聚焦于大同城市建设热潮褪却后的深刻转型。基于2015年至2019年的田野调查，Judith采用民族志方法纪录了城市居民和煤矿工人家庭在城市转型过程中的日常生活经验。通过观察繁荣退却后废墟之上的社会关系，她反思了中国城市（尤其是资源型城市）再开发的非线性时间性和空间重构，对本地实践与城市想象的社会影响。废墟和未完成不仅仅代表建设的中断和城市发展的减缓，还象征着本地居民对城市的守候与期望。

This presentation focuses on Datong’s urban transformation after the construction boom. I develop this ethnographic approach to understand urbanization in relation to the city’s industrial background: coal mining. By looking at the social dynamics after a construction boom, I highlight a specific articulation of space and time shaping the city dwellers’experiences of expecting and waiting for urbanity. I study the social consequences of Datong’s profound urban transformation and its interruption through an ethnography of social relations and everyday life amidst the rubble of slowed-down development. Ruination and unfinishedness characterise not only the interrupted construction sites but also local population’s expectations while waiting for a long-lasting temporary situation to evolve.

Based on fieldwork conducted from 2015 until 2019, this research documents the urban residents’ and families of coalminers’ experiences of urban transformation as well as their patterns of everyday life in different neighborhoods, both in the city center and in the mining area. Giving special attention to the temporalities of acceleration and slowing down, as well as their social impact on local practices and urban imaginaries, I reflect on the non-linearity of Chinese urban redevelopment. Furthermore, this approach addresses the social and spatial reconfigurations of resource-based cities (资源型城市) in the context of China’s energy transition.
